“Great Performances” kicks off its season with “The Audition”

Forwarded to me by a friend of Deb Birnbaum, who’s a well-known breathing coach:

I wanted to let you know that the Metropolitan Opera’s award winning HD film ‘THE AUDITION’ will be aired on WNET PBS on Wednesday, Jan 13, 2010 at 9:00 (at least that is the time for New York). This wonderful feature length documentary (directed by Susan Froemke), takes you behind the scenes of the Met Opera National Council Auditions. A portion of the Breath Technique class that I teach to the finalists is included in the film (about 1/2 way through). It’s a short glimpse, but fun….I think you’ll enjoy watching ‘The Audition’, it is a very poignant and realistic look at the competition.

The Agony of Competition, With Cameras Rolling
“Along with scenes of agonizing competition, “The Audition” has moments that will hearten all opera lovers. It is endearing to watch the young singers fulfill their fantasies of making it to the Met’s storied stage.”

You can view the trailer on Youtube.
